We start our plants from seed, and grow numerous varieties to enhance the diversity of our program. Each variety enjoys its own unique properties of taste, texture, and sweetness. Our customers are able to enjoy fresh produce that is not only local, but simply can’t be found at the local market.
There are substantial health benefits to eating locally grown food. Freshly picked produce still retains vital nutrients, which quickly deteriorate as food sits on shelves. And many studies indicate the increased level of vitamins, minerals, and micro-nutrients available in produce grown in our type of program. See FourStringFarm Blog under ”Health Info” for more information about these health benefits.
Our food is grown to be fresh and healthy and delicious, as nature intended it to be. Conventionally grown vegetables (tomatoes, for example) are designed to ripen simultaneously (for ease of machine harvesting); to have tough skins (for transport); to be the same size and roughly square-shaped (to fit better in the shipping crate); and to have a long shelf life. They are bred to withstand the harsh chemical pesticides and fertilizers that are applied. This tomato, grown in Mexico or South America, travels on average 1,500 miles before it hits the grocery shelf in Rockort, TX. Consumers may decide where taste and health properties rank in these conventionally grown vegetables.
At our farm, you can freshly pick a variety of heirloom tomatoes from the vine. They are red, beautiful, juicy, healthy and delicious. You can feel the sun and stand in the soil where your food is grown. Come visit our garden, and you will know that we share your passion for growing and eating wholesome food.
