Kayla in the News

Friends, Kayla was in the news yesterday on KRIS Channel 6 talking about the new FDA requirements for chain restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus.

Kayla is working as a private dietitian consultant, and we are excited that she is being called as a resource for these kinds of stories.

    • The policy requires all chain restaurants with more than 20 outlets to post the calorie count of every menu item. This applies to all restaurants, cinemas, amusement parks, convenience stores, vending machines, etc.

The calorie count must be posted on the menu-board, drive-thru menu board, menus, and so on. Some chains, like McDonald’s and Starbucks, have already begun to post the calorie count in anticipation of the mandate next year.

This requirement by the FDA is part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, aka Obama Care. The requirement is intended to empower consumers with more information to help them make healthier choices.

The criticism of the program is that it is too costly for restaurants which will lead to higher food prices, it is too much bureaucratic oversight by the government, and that health care legislation has no business setting mandates in the fast food line.

  1. A calorie total is as easy as having the recipe and a calculator. It takes as much effort to put a new dish on a menu as it does to add the calorie count. I think the real push back is from restaurants who don’t want the public to know just how unhealthy some of their food is. Great job Kayla.
