New Recipes from the First Thanksgiving

Check out the November issue of THE BEND for some wonderful recipes inspired by the First Thanksgiving.

Kayla was quite pregnant during this photo shoot–we had Madeleine two days after these pictures.  The one of Emma smelling the onion is priceless.

If you like seafood, you will love to know that the Pilgrims served seafood as the main course at the First Thanksgiving.  This Colonial Pumpkin Pie recipe may be the most original, unique, and delicious pie on your Thanksgiving table.

Flip to page 109 for these recipes and enjoy every page of this beautiful magazine.

  1. The print is too small to read. When I click on the magnifying glass, it takes me back to the main blog article. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    • Thank you for letting me know about that! If you click on the “Click to Read” icon in the middle of the picture of the magazine, it should take you to a screen that clearly displays the entire magazine. Then, in the bottom left corner, there is a + and – sign to make the printer larger or smaller.

If you click on any part of the magazine, it should take you there. If this does not work, please let me know. Meanwhile, I will try to find out why that is happening to you! Thank you so much! Justin

  2. I had sent an email a few weeks back about touring the farm and gaining a better understanding of how we could partner for wholesale produce herbs and eggs. I have not as of yet received a reply.

Please let me know if this is possible and what may be a best time to connect.

    Thank you,

    • Hello Dana! I am so sorry you did not get a reply! We recently changed our e-mail address, and I did not unfortunately update the new e-mail on all our sites! We missed several messages because of this, and I am so sorry to miss yours! Our new e-mail is justinallenbutts@gmail.com, please try us there in the future.

We sell our products exclusively through the Farm Share that we deliver to our customers through Coastal Bend Health Foods. We don’t currently have an option for wholesale pricing or selling specific items (like produce or eggs) outside of the Farm Share. If you are interested in getting one or more farm shares and using those products in your bakings, we would love to help you!

We did not know about your bakery until now, but we are excited to stop by and will soon! Thank you so much for your interest in our farm! We look forward to meeting you soon! Justin

  3. The pumpkin pie looks splendid! It’s not going to be on the Thanksgiving day menu because of circumstances (travel, no real kitchen, and so on) but I will give it a try once the weather’s cooled and I’m feeling a bit more pumpkinish!

    • Speaking of feeling pumpkinish, I was just given a present of about 50 or more huge orange pumpkins, really big ones!

The Methodist church in town does a big pumpkin sale with picture opportunities for the children every October. They had a lot of pumpkins left over, so they invited me to go down and pick them up! I will let you know how many pies Kayla can get out of them! (Or, how much the pigs enjoy them, depending on the increasing level of ripeness.)

Those whole pumpkin pies are fun and very unique. We are going to post a recipe for a SAVORY whole pumpkin pie which is completely amazing. I am wishing you a great night!

  4. I’ve been following your farm for a few years, and would like to recommend you as a speaker at the Mother Earth News Fair in Belton this February.

I’ve been asked by MEN to submit ideas of local speakers/topics that pertain to our geographic area. I believe this came out of a comment we made about how the fair lacked people with knowledge about our specific considerations.

If you would like more information, or are interested in participating, please let me know, and I will pass your bio on to the Mother Earth News Team.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

  5. First let me apologize for accidentally sending the previous email before I had finished composing it.

I live outside of Victoria Texas, and have been following your farm for a few years. You have a wealth of information that could be beneficial to homesteaders in the Coastal Bend region of Texas, as well as to those with similar soil and climate patterns across the state.

I would like to recommend you as a speaker at the Mother Earth News Fair in Belton this February.

You would be a tremendous asset to those starting out, as well as to those who are ready to take their farmsteads to the next level.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

    • Hello Ms. Purcell! Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful message! We are honored that you think enough of us to recommend us to Mother Earth News. Yes, we would love to be a part of a Mother Earth News Fair!

We love Mother Earth News and have tried several times over the years to attend a Fair. With farming, it is really hard to get a way even for a few days, to take the time not to mention the expense. But this would make it a wonderful trip for the family not mention an incredible experience for us.

We read the list of speakers and their bios for all the Fairs, and we are just so honored that you consider us in that company. Your wonderful message has made our day! Yes, we would love this opportunity and would be honored, and because we know how many amazing people Mother Earth News has to draw from, we totally understand if it doesn’t work out this time around. We are just so thankful for your thoughtfulness!

Let me know anything you need from us, e-mail me at justinallenbutts@gmail.com and if at all possible stop by and visit us soon! All the best to you, thank you again! Justin and Kayla
